GUGLIELMO MARCONI: CENTENARY OF THE NOBEL LAUREATE
WHO UNLOCKED THE SECRETS OF THE ETHER
In 1895, in his home in the hills just outside Bologna, the extraordinary scientist, Guglielmo Marconi,
carried out his first experiments with wireless telegraph transmission. It was a turning-point in the
history of mankind, the benefits of which we are still reaping today. For the world-changing results
of his research, Marconi was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909, the first Italian to win such
prestigious world-wide recognition in the field of science. The Marconi Foundation - based in the same
villa where the scientist carried out those experiments - is currently organising a series of events to
celebrate the centenary of his Nobel award. The villa also houses a museum of personal and scientific
objects, while the mausoleum containing Marconi’s tomb stands in its grounds
